COVID-19 is having a profound impact on the global economy, with widespread human and financial costs. As the pandemic has spread from East Asia to Europe and the United States, over 50 countries have declared a national emergency, leading to large-scale isolation, travel restrictions, and social distancing measures. These measures have significantly reduced personal and corporate spending, disrupting supply chains and leading to market uncertainty. The medical device industry is also feeling the effects, with changes in demand for products such as CTO balloon dilatation catheters. As medical procedures are delayed or cancelled, demand for certain medical devices has decreased, while COVID-19 complications have increased demand for others. The full extent of COVID-19's impact on the global market remains to be seen, but it is clear that the effects will be far-reaching and long-lasting.

CTO balloon dilatation catheter

The concept of CTO

CTO refers to chronic total occlusion in medicine. The coronary artery of the heart is mainly responsible for blood supply and oxygen supply to the myocardium. If the coronary artery is severely narrowed, it may cause myocardial ischemia. CTO is the complete blockage or occlusion of a coronary artery, which is caused by a chronic disease process such as atherosclerosis. The blockage can lead to significant myocardial ischemia and can be considered for medical intervention to open the CTO lesion. However, the procedure is technically challenging, and if the CTO is hard and has been present for a long time, medical intervention may not be successful in achieving revascularization, and bypass surgery may be necessary based on the condition of the blood vessels.

Introduction of CTO balloon dilatation catheter

CTO balloon dilatation catheter is a medical device used to open chronic total occlusions in coronary arteries to improve myocardial perfusion. This type of balloon catheter is designed specifically for opening completely blocked coronary arteries, which is a technically challenging procedure. While it is not typically used with transesophageal echocardiography, it does allow doctors to track the catheter's progress through the coronary artery using X-ray imaging. A catheter is inserted into the coronary artery via a puncture in the femoral artery or radial artery, and the balloon is inflated to compress the plaque and dilate the occlusion. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and typically takes several hours to complete.

Usage of CTO balloon dilatation catheter

It's important to clarify that CTO balloon dilatation catheter is primarily used to treat chronic total occlusion (CTO) lesions in the coronary artery. These are complete blockages of the vessel, which can cause myocardial ischemia and require medical intervention to restore blood flow.

During the procedure, a catheter is inserted through a small incision and guided to the blocked area of the artery. The balloon at the end of the catheter is then inflated, which compresses the plaque against the walls of the artery and widens the vessel. This improves myocardial perfusion and reduces symptoms of angina.

In some cases, the CTO lesion may be located near a collateral branch, which is a smaller blood vessel that helps supply blood to the affected area. In order to avoid damaging the collateral branch, the balloon catheter may need to be passed through a side hole in the stent, allowing it to carefully navigate the narrow area and minimize the risk of complications.
